Identify the bottleneck

Measure the usable opening and the space to turn on both sides. A narrow door is sometimes less restrictive than the hallway or staircase beyond it.

Look for smaller delivered pieces

Flat-pack sofas, modular units, and models with removable backs or arms can have smaller rigid pieces. Confirm the maker’s largest piece dimension and assembly instructions; do not infer delivery fit from an “apartment” label.

Ask what can safely come off

Removable legs may save a few inches. Cushion removal helps weight and handling but may not shrink the frame. Only remove structural parts when the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

Confirm the delivery arrangement

Ask whether the carrier brings boxes inside, assembles on site, removes packaging, and handles stairs. Check failed-delivery fees and return eligibility before ordering.

Compare candidates consistently

Record clear opening, tightest turn, largest rigid part, boxed size, assembly needs, and return cost. Send the seller photos and measurements when clearance is tight.
